Transport
IN SUSSEX

TRANSPORT
is a priority
Sussex is one of the most beautiful counties in Britain, but getting around it isn’t always easy.
Our roads are congested, our buses are good in some areas, but patchy in others and our rail links are uneven. If we want a thriving local economy, cleaner air and stronger communities, we need a transport system that actually works for Sussex.
As Mayor, I’ll make transport one of my priorities.
A JOINED UP
Sussex
Transport doesn’t stop at council borders and neither should our planning. I’ll create a Sussex Integrated Transport Plan that brings together councils, bus and rail operators, and active-travel groups under a county-wide strategy.
This plan will coordinate:
-
Buses and trains so that timetables and ticketing connect.
-
Housing and transport, ensuring new homes are built around good public transport links, not increasing car dependency.
Sussex deserves joined-up thinking rather than the patchwork approach we’ve had for too long.

BUSES
That work for everyone
In many Sussex towns and villages, bus services have been cut back or made unaffordable.
I’ll push for a Sussex Bus Charter with three clear goals:
-
Flat-fare zones across urban areas to make travel affordable.
-
Evening and Sunday routes restored so people can get to work, leisure and hospital shifts.
-
Park-and-Ride schemes in key locations like Brighton, Chichester and Crawley to cut congestion and improve air quality.
-
Bus connectivity to our villages our smaller communities.
I’ll also work with councils and operators to expand the use of electric buses to build a cleaner, quieter fleet for the future.
RAIL
that connects the coast
The rail network is vital - but often slow, unreliable, and overcrowded. I’ll bring together Southern Rail, BTP and Sussex Police to tackle persistent problems of vandalism and antisocial behaviour on the Coastway West line – this route needs to be safe to travel on at all times of the day.
Here are some of my other priorities;
-
More frequent and reliable coastal services between Brighton, Worthing, Littlehampton, Chichester and Bognor.
-
Better links between Hastings and London.
-
Integrated ticketing so that one ticket works across rail and bus routes.

SMARTER ROADS
Safer travel
We need to manage our roads better.
I’ll launch a Sussex Roads Review, to target bottlenecks on the A27 and A259 routes and identify quick wins to improve flow and safety. Areas like Chichester, Worthing and Arundel are being seriously impacted by congestion, and this needs to change.
Priorities include:
-
Redesigning junctions to improve traffic flow
-
AI traffic-light systems to reduce queues at peak times.
-
Work to make dangerous roads safer (such as the A259 near Newhaven)
-
More active management of road works to reduce congestion.
ACTIVE TRAVEL
For health & the environment

Cycling and walking aren’t just good for the planet — they’re also good for our health and the economy too. I’ll invest in safe cycle routes linking town centres, stations and schools, and improve pedestrian safety in busy areas. But these should be well-designed and shouldn’t increase congestion, unlike some in Brighton. We need more people to cycle, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of increased inconvenience for drivers.
