I LIVE IN WEST SUSSEX WITH MY PARTNER WHO'S AN NHS NURSE AND OUR 4 CHILDREN
I began my schooling in Brighton, then later attended a grammar school in Lancashire after being awarded a military scholarship.
I graduated from the University of Brighton Business School with an Honours Degree and went on to co-found the largest hospitality company in the South alongside my former business partner and conservative ex government minister, Simon Kirby.
BEING FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE WITH YOUR MONEY IS AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY PLAN
With a turnover exceeding £24 million and more than 300 employees, we operated a wide range of venues, including pubs, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and a fitness centre. At one point, we were recognised by The Sunday Times as one of the fastest-growing companies in the UK.
After selling this business, I built several more, including the UK’s first-ever social enterprise pub in Brighton. I've been a business columnist for The Telegraph and established a successful rural-economy business in France. I also presented two seasons of Channel 4’s reality business show “Risking it All” and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Brighton University for services to the community.
"For me, it's all about people, and the community"
In addition to my business interests, I've been a Prince’s Trust mentor, a trans-Atlantic sailor. I'm also a keen hiker, and cyclist. I've been actively involved in politics, helping Peter Kyle get elected as the MP for Hove on three occasions. I've written several business books, including one that became a bestseller.
I'm a long-time supporter and fundraiser for Off The Fence homeless charity, as well as being a Greenpeace supporter for over 30 years. On my mother’s side of the family, my grandfather was a Durham miner, while on my father’s side, we can trace our family roots back three centuries in West Sussex.
More recently, I published a well-received crime fiction novel titled The Most Dangerous Man in Brighton.
Over a nine-year period, I volunteered thousands of hours for Sussex Police, serving first as a Special Constable and then a Special Sergeant.
I was commended by the Chief Constable for saving a man’s life and received three additional medals, as well as a special pin for serving during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I have a real passion for creating change and improving people’s lives. Currently, I am the Managing Director of Regency Radio, based in Lancing.
